Presented to King George IIl by Lord Cowper in 1781 as a Raphael Self Portrait.

Dimensions believed to have been reduced, though unclear whether before it journeyed from Italy to England.

RAFAELLO and VRBINVS inscription noted on doublet buttons. The paint layers of this are reported by Shearman to be contiguous with the original paint layers, and not a later addition as previously described.
