  Raphael and Fornarina in Art
Fornarina was the daughter of baker Francesco Lute of Siena, who lived in Rome on Via del Goviero Vecchio in the Trastevere area (where her house with the window of Fornarina, Via Santa Dorotea 20 still shows). As semi-legendary stories say, the girl was Roman love artist who met her by accident, fell in love, bought her from her father for 3,000 gold and took her a villa (allegedly in Via di Porta Settimiana).

Fornarina remained his lover and model until the artist's death. Fidelity to her beloved Raphael, as claimed, she did not differ. In particular, it is noted that she became the mistress of Agostino Chigi, for whom Rafael painted Villa Farnesina, and also drew attention to the pupils of the artist. Having received a sufficient fortune after the early death of 37-year-old Raphael, nevertheless, continued to lead a dissolute life and became, as claimed, one of the most famous Roman courtesans.

In his Lives of the Artists, Giorgio Vasari claims that Raphael “could not offer his mind to his work as a result of his infatuation for his mistress”; he even insinuates that this mystery lady might have caused Raphael’s untimely death (attributed to excessive sexual exertion).
Margarita isn't mentioned by Vasari however is known as doubly in sixteenth-century marginalia to the second edition of his Lives of the foremost wonderful Painters, Sculptors, and designers, beside the passage describing La donna velata: “portrait of Margarita, Raphael’s mistress … Margarita”.
